Lightbulb possible cable modem configuration?

After finaly realizing that my internal cable modem wont EVER work with anything better than windows 98 i wanted to get a little feed back on something different. i was thinking if it was possible to some how have a 2 way external cable modem work as a 1 way cable modem in colaboration with an internal 56k modem. the 2 way would only receive the information at the computers request then the computer would not send information to the cable modem to send but it would direct all outgoing info to the 56k modem. then of course the computer would also be a router giving internet to all the other computers on the internet. by the way im a complete at these things.
