Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

posessed cdrom that forces restart

The first time this happened I thought it was a fluke, but now.......I just had to restart again. My cdrom is posessed. While playing a music cd, all goes fine (different cd's each time) a few songs play, then it freezes for a second, and then (I know very little computer lingo) the cdrom sounds like its gearing up, only gearing up to a sound level (so fast) that I've never heard it go that fast in all my time owning the computer. It sounds horrible....I end up having to press the restart button on my tower because for some reason it seems to lock up my logging out to restart too (or else its operating too slowly to wait while my cdrom keeps spinning louder and louder)

Is there a diagnosis for something like this? I don't know how to describe it any better. I've got a used 700mhz Pentium III computer running JAMD linux (based on RedHat 9).

I'd be greatful for any words of assistance.....I really like to play music cd's on this machine but this problem is making it impossible.

Could you post the hardware specs, any errors in the logs, and if there are any errors in the logs, the output from hdparm -I <device>?
