Portable hard drive linux

I am a high school student, a noob to linux, who loves tech stuff. I want a portable linux, but one that can save changes and store data between sessions, and is transportable between computers. If I were to buy a portable hard drive, could I make it bootable and install one or more linux distros there?

Yes, so long as your computer BIOS supports USB booting
