poor performance on Intel 4965AGN WiFi card

Hello all,

I have a Dell Inspiron with the optional Intel 4965ANG (spec-N) wireless card. I have extremely poor performance during large transfers. Small/bursty transfers like browsing and email work fine and fast, but any large/sustained transfers like file downloads or network drive usage grind to a virtual halt (100 kbps or less).

The system is running a relatively stock Fedora 9 installation, with all updates applied.

The problem occurs regardless of access point association... I've tried a Cisco AP1121G, Linksys WAP11B, WRT54G, and NetGear WGR614. Signal strength is always excellent and other clients all perform well on these access points, even the 802.11b one =)

I'd love any info anybody can offer. Thanks!

Large file transfers can have reduce bandwidth by using encryption. Noise from other devices using 2.4 GHz band can reduce throughput. Third power management can reduce throughput too. Using a file system such as ReiserFS or EXT3 will provide you poor write performance for less processor usage. I suggest use either XFS or JFS.

On my Inspiron 1520 using Intel WiFi model 3945, it works fine for big file downloads and during video streaming like movie trailers from Apple's site. I connected to some one's wireless network just to test my card and performance, so I can not tell you for certain the distance between my notebook computer to the wireless network.

802.11n is still in development. If one 802.11n adapter can access the router or access point does not mean the other will. Majority of 802.11n adapters and devices are proprietary at this time.

Thanks for the input.

I should have mentioned that the access points listed above all handle other clients fine. They are all in lab or other relatively controlled environments, tested at various distances and with limited interference nearby.

I assumed it is something with the hardware or driver, so I guess I'm just waiting for newer drives and firmware... maybe it will help.
