You probably need to use a newer distribution. Red Hat 9 is really old. If you have used Red Hat before, try Fedora Core or CentOS. Or try a live CD like Knoppix or the Live Ubuntu CD to see if linux will work on the machine.

Another option is to try taking one of the following quizes to pick a distro that may be right for you:

hi,
I already tried Fedora core but am still getting the same result. A friend of mine say it would work becos of the kind of HDD installed on the HP compaq dc7600. He says LINUX is not compatible with a SATA HDD, and that it usually requires a driver.
I dont know how far this is true, but am still open to more suggestions. Thank u.

cheers.

You might be able to try a different distribution. Ubuntu 5.10, breezy badger may work. I've heard rumors SimplyMepsis works as well. Most of the problem is that you need to get one of the newer linux kernels. I'm not sure what chipset your motherboard uses, but you may also be able to go into the bios and have the SATA drive run in IDE mode.

Check out this link: http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html

The first couple paragraphs list a bunch of distro's where SATA support is supposed to be included in the kernel on the installation media. Some, like Debian, require you to pass special parameters when you first boot the installation CD.

For best help post hardware specs for your pc model readily available from owner manual or web. You should review HCL for the operating system of interest at their web site, especially regarding intel945G chipset and sata controller.See this http://linuxmafia.com/pipermail/cons...ly/001287.html regarding fedora core4. Trial with new kanotix-2005-04 live-cd,SimplyMepis, or Fedora based live-cd may help too.
