Spell out your words.

And there is no 'best' answer here. This will be YOUR laptop....YOU have to pick the one that best suits you, your needs, and your budget.

Dell seems to have the advantage when it come to quality.

The Dell is way better as far as hardware goes, it's advantages are:
-Better video card
-Twice the memory
-Better power supply
-Lighter in weight
-7 in 1 card reader
-Not as much bloatware, better performance.

The HP has some slight advantages:
-Twice the dedicated video memory, but nvidia is more expensive for a reason.
-Carry case
-Better speakers, probably similar sound device, one would have to read up on the chipset differences.
-Better operating system, but if all you want is to run Linux, this is not an issue, the Dell appears to come with no GUI according to wikipedia article on FreeDos.

Decide your needs, compare with available models and whichever fills your needs just go for it. Of course, it should be in your budget.

This thread was two years old, and those points have already been mentioned.
