plz help.....sound, sis 7018

i have had problems with my sound since i installed slack 9 and i finally got all the devices changed to 777 (btw....i always am root right now so it doesnt matter too much) or 666 i cant remember but when i load aRTS and then kde starts i get no sound but if i turn my speaker up all the way and then mess with the volume control from there i can hear the little fuzz of loud speakers go quiet and then back to a little fuzz again. when i try xmms with aRTS selected it plays the file but no sound. if i select another output plugin (other than aRTS and Disk Writer) when i hit play it shows 0:00 but wont play the file (e sound gives me the 3 sound errors and OSS just wont work) can u please help me i am almost set to delete windows i just need my sound to work and a linux version of Kazaa or clone (any hints?) thx a million
