Plextor PX-708A
I am thinking of buying the DVD burner Plextor PX-708A. Does anyone knows if it works with cdrecord? I checked Joerg's web page for this info and couldn't find it.

I got a reply from Florian Lindauer. Here it is:

If you read all of the thread "DVD recording adventures continued" from
November and December, you will find most of your questions answered
there. But in short:
> - Does it work OK with Linux?
At current situation, things look not so bad.
With the current pxupdate you can flash firmware. Plextor still only
provides the firmware as Windows-exe, but you can extract the image using
cabextract. With the latest 1.03, I have currently no problems with any
of the media I own (but there are lots more..). Perhaps you also could
write to Plextor to let them know you are interested in the drive but
want to use it with Linux and would like zipped firmware.
I use growisofs for both DVD+R/DVD-R without problems, and I can
use cdrecord-proDVD with DVD-R. It does not work with DVD+R currently,
but the author said this problem is known and will be addressed in
a future release.
> - Any tips for using this drive?
Well, best you read the thread, nothing special in my mind now.

At the moment I would say the drive is OK for Linux - still it sure could
get better. I only know I cannot recommend the NEC drives for Linux, and
others said to me that Pioneer-drives are among the best for Linux.
In the end, it's your decision
Good luck to you.
