Plextor DVD burner in external enclosure not working
 

I just got a Plextor PX-712A and stuck it in a Macally FireWire/USB2.0 external enclosure for my laptop, but it doesn't seem to get recognized. When I try to plug it into my laptop's USB ports(1.1, BTW), nothing changes in dmesg. If I plug it into a FireWire port (through a pcmcia card), I get "ieee1394: Error parsing configrom for node 1-00:1023
ieee1394: Node changed: 1-00:1023 -> 1-01:1023". My other USB devices work fine, but I don't have any other FireWire hardware to test for that. Lastly, I'm running Mandrake 10.1 Official which has kernel 2.6.8.
