Plextor's PX 712A compatible with Linux?
I'm looking into DVD burners, and this one looks like a good buy.
However, I can't seem to find anything on Linux compatibility since it is relatively new. |
I just bought one of these. Recommend upgrading to firmware 1.03 (latest as I'm writing this). Mine came with 1.00; the drive would return errors after writing one disc, and I had to reboot to write each additional disc (both cdrecord-prodvd and dvd+rw-tools gave this error). I'm testing it right now, but it seems fine so far with 1.03.

Hi, I'm trying to get my PX-712A to burn DVD-Rs; normal CD-Rs work fine, but both dvd+rw-tools and cdrecord-prodvd fail when trying to burn DVD-Rs (I have tried various media and speed settings without luck)

I just bought a Plextor PX-712A for my home machine too. (AMD Athlon64 3000+ running SuSE 9.1 x86_64, 2.6.4-52-default SuSE kernel) I have noticed the same issue. Even upgrading dvd+rw-tools to the latest version (5.21.4.10.8) gives me an OPC failed while attempting to burn onto a Memorex 8X DVD-R. This is at all speeds (1x, 4x, 6x, 8x attempted) The 12X-capable DVD+R supplied with the Plextor worked flawlessly after a dvd+rw-tools upgrade (it had issues with the stock version that comes with SuSE 9.1). In all instances, I used K3b as the frontend for burning. This issue remains even after upgrading to Firmware version 1.05 (available as of Sept 1 2004). I upgraded the firmware in Windows, FYI. That same Memorex 8X DVD-R media works flawlessly in Windows XP Professional with Roxio Easy CD/DVD creator using "PowerRec" as the speed (utilizes the Plextor's PowerRec feature, which I have no idea how that works...) The short fix for me will be to buy DVD+R media from here on out. From what I've read on minimal google searching, DVD+R compatibility isn't too bad(?) anymore. |
