Pleez Help for new Hardware--ROUTER--Installation
 

Pleez Help,
I have RHLE4, it has detected my USB ADSL Router Huawei Quidway WA 1003 A (Modem) Correctly (by Kudzu). But I am unable to install/configure it, as the Device Drivers are not available. I checked up for the Device drivers at DriverGuide.com and the OEM but didn't get it. The Router works perfectly in Windows. I use it to connect to Internet. I have another Dial-Up Modem (Conexant) which works perfectly in RHLE4, which incidentally did not require loading of any external device drivers. Can any one help me to find its device driver or If there is any other means/procedure for setting-up or installing --- Thanx

If it's really a router (as it seems to be as far as I could google it up), you do not need a device driver for it (at least not for connecting to the internet).

You have to configure your network interface either to use DHCP (if the router runs a DHCP server) or give it a static IP address (like 192.168.0.1) plus the router's IP address as gateway and DNS server.

It did not help, I took my ISPs Ip addtesses, can you please explain a little bit more, it is a router no doubts what-so-ever --Thanx

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any info on that Huawei Quidway WA 1003 router - at least nothing I could read.
So, I have to ask you some basic questions to determine your setup. Apologies if some of them sound a bit stupid.

• Is the router connected your computer by USB, network cable or not at all?
• Is it a wireless or ethernet router? (has it an antenna?)
• Does your computer have a wireless (WiFi) and/or ethernet networking card?
• What networking settings do you use with Windows?
• What information did you have to enter to make it work with Windows? (just the type of information, DON'T post actual passwords or something)

Hi..I too have the same modem and connected thro USB cable..
but couldnt get it configured...
if someone can throw light on how USB modems are generally configured ..ill be really grateful..

mavv, i got it working in ubuntu (dapper) ..it just works out of the box..
I have figured out that the chipset used is eagle-usb.

hi all,I am using the same router but I am using through ethernet ,do I have to use only USB or can I make do with ethernet?

P.S: I am using Fedora core 6,if thats any help

if its..an ethernet its a breeze for u..
just set ur ip accordingly(static/dynamic)
and the DNS ....thats..it !

tuxtoti,I went to Network and set up all the ip addresses and activated it but when I open the browser nothing happens,I also have an USB port so I set it up in win xp and about to try out what you said.

what distro are u using? my assumption...is that a dhcpd should be running on your rouuter...so set your ip of ur eth(x) to be dynamic..
Just put the Primary and secondary DNS given by ur ISP
and activate ur ethernet card

EDIT : tuxtoti I tried out what you said but it didn't work,my router also sends out wifi(wifi doesn't work too,it says something about SCIOSFLAGS or something like that) signals and I am having dual boot with xp.I really appreciate the help you gave me.

USB ADSL modems are not fully supported in Linux. You will have to do some homework to find out what chipset it uses. The easiest way is go to UL or FCC site and find the information there. After that you will have to find out what the name of the module you need to load. Then you have to figure out how to use PPPoE.

If you use a cable modem, it is a lot simpler because they use a standard that is called DOCSIS. The kernel supports cable modems that uses the DOCSIS standard. Cable modems in Linux are setup just like an ethernet device.

To make it easier, I recommend using an Ethernet based ADSL modem. Then use router with NAT to block most attacks from your computer. Do not buy a device that combines both a ADSL modem and a router because it is harder to upgrade the modem when your ISP upgrades their equipment and harder to replace a failed device.

BTW, there is no such thing as device driver in Linux. These device driver as you call them in Windows is called module in Linux. Routers are not modems and modems are not routers.

Thanks a lot guys,I fixed the problem I went inside the router and activated dhcp and then fed the DNS servers,ip address,subnet mask etc.,etc., and tada it is working.

P.S : I was using the ethernet.
