A good external modem should work with no problems.

Get an external modem, assuming you have the serial port for it. (Do they make USB modems nowadays?) They're about the same price as PCI modems, but are much less hassle (no case-cracking!), have nifty little status LED's, and just in general work better.

Hi,

Most internal modems are software (win) modems

They do make external USB modems, but sadly most are also software modems, so it is best to stay away from them unless you can find one which is a hardware modem.

Otherwise, you should be safe with any serial port external modem. I like and have had good luck with the U.S. Robotics sportster external modems.

Hi,

I didn't need to install any drivers. It is a serial port modem so it appears to use standard commands. It is set-up as a serial port modem (it's not installed on my main computer so I can't check the exact device location right now). Anyways, I couldn't get the mandrake internet connection wizard to work right (seemed a tad buggy), so I ended up installing Kppp for dialing software and connecting through it instead of the Mandrake internet conection thing. It's been working fine.

It is set-up as device /dev/ttyS0 as it is an external serial port modem. If it were internal it would likely be set-up as /dev/modem

Hi,

I have no experience with external USB modems and Linux. I've heard that most aren't supported (or at least not without additional software) as they tend to be software modems. It looks like if it is detected, a USB modem would be at /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 or something similar.

Also, It looks like the US Robotics 2973 (or 2976) modem is a fairly inexpensive internal PCI hardware modem, if you'd rather go that route

Good Luck

A Conexant/Rockwell internal modem has fine free 2.4 kernel support, but the 2.6/newer driver from Linuxant isn't free/full speed.

Primer:
Until we know that and internal "winmodem" is fully supported, for free, and everyone is pointing at it, I would stick to external hardware. Besides the externals fit inside most cases, making them internal. (It's all in your mind)
So,
Single Point CN5614XR can be had for $35 at newegg.com
try this at ebay: "modem external v.92 serial" you should find lots of "buy it now" for $10 to $20.

I hear that you should not bother with USB Externals.

In Mandrake 10.0, make sure you have KPPP and pppd. there may be other dependencies.

Tell linux where your modem is...
because pppd looks for a device at /dev/modem, goto console and make this symbolic link:
ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem
(assumes modem is plugged into com1. if you plug into com2 use "ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem")
Launch and configure KPPP and see what happens!

Currently use an external serial Creative modem blaster, modem with Mandrake 10 amongst other OS's - no drivers needed - just put your ISP login details, modem device name & connection speed etc into kppp and you're sorted.
