Exclamation Please Need Help To Fix Radeon 9500 Pro In Mandrake 9.1

I have read lots of threads and tried what they suggest...so here is a quick run of the few things I have tried:

First system specs

Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev2.0 (Nforce2 chipset)
AMD 2500+
512 Kingmax DDR-333 Ram
SB Live MP3 5.1
Integrated 3Com Ethernet Port
Western Digital 40gig 8meg HD
Maxtor 40gig 7200rpm HD

Dual boot using Lilo for XP Pro and Mandrake9.1

I have tried downloading the drivers for the chipset from Asus/Nvidia and the FireGL driver from Schneider. I didn't install Mesa upon setup (as the thread said) and installed the rpm for the Nforce2 drivers, then restarted linux (wasn't sure but read somewhere that I should to restart the new module??) then forced the install of the FireGl drivers for the XFree 4.3.0 version. It said something about a hunk problem and a tainted module but installed. Then I ran the fglrxconfig and I have tried all different sorts of options. When I reboot X won't start, it says there is an error in the vid card and X can't start. Then it tries to go through a reselection of the vid card and even if you reselct the old XF86 drivers for Radeon X still won't start!

SO,

Next I tried a thread that required the same install of the Nforce Drivers and using the same FireGL drivers and then used build mod to do something ??? that it required.....and still the same prob!

I have now read threads that say rebuilding the kernel is necessary..........I NEED A ADVANCED LINUX USER TO HELP PLEASE!!!!!!

If I try to run tuxracer it is slow and says that XFree86-DRI doesn't exist on 0:0 ????

OUTPUT FROM
# X -showconfig
-------------------
XFree86 Version 4.3.0
Release Date: 27 February 2003
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.21-0.13mdksmp i686 [ELF]
Build Date: 12 March 2003
Before reporting problems, check http://www.XFree86.Org/
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present

SO WHAT IS THE FIX TO MAKE THIS WORK FOR MANDRAKE9.1 with XFree86 version 4.3.0 ....PLEASE A FIX THAT WORKS >>>>WALK A NEWB THROUGH>>>>

BTW>>>>THIS IS MY 4TH POST OF THIS SAME QUESTION AND EITHER NO ONE REPLIES OR THEY SAY CHECK THE THREADS>>>>PLEASE REMEMBER I HAVE PRINTED AND TRIED MORE THREADS THAN I HAVE PRINTER INK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKYOU

DH

go here and download the rpm, dont worry about it being for abit.
double click the rpm restart the pc and linux should start a new hardware found thing and it will configure the network card.

at least thats what happned to me

Okay, can you be more specific about what error is happening when x crashes?

When X crashes

Okay i reboot.....

then it goes through the whole processing modules, file system, ethernet, internet etc.....

then it tries to start X (aka screen goes black) then when X would normally start I am thrown to a text login prompt (aka non graphical terminal...) then a few seconds later is started a small graphical prompt telling me there was a problem starting X because of the video and would I like to reconfigure it. If I say no, I am back to the non-graphical login, if I say yes -- I get to rechoose the vid card back to Radeon, but then i still won't go into X. (this is prob, because of the new XF86config-4 file created when I run fglrxconfig)

here is what it says when I install the FireGL drivers

*** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
*** WARNING ***

Okay, what is the output of your '/var/log/XFree86.0.log' file? This should tell us what is causing x to crash. Also, which version of the ati drivers are you using?

I am using the drivers for the FireGl as posted on the schneider site....and I use the ones for the XFree8 4.3.0

I don't crash X unless I run fglrxconfig

so it is probably something with that.......
but if i don't run fglrx config it WILL load X ---> but with no DRI or 3d accel

I force the fglrx driver rpm...then go to the appropriate location it indicates and run the ./make and the ./makeinstall

I think this is to link the modules?

and then reboot and I am fine....but the driver in the XF86Config file says that it is RADEON and I have tried switching this to glx and fglrx, but when i change it X won't load again.....

so do you want to see the log from when I change the RADEON to glx or fglrx or when i run fglrxconfig?

or could you just start from scratch with me...and get this installed...then in exchange....i will go through the forum and post the solution to the other 40 or fifty posts about the R300 chipsets....

thanks for taking the time....

Cheers,

DH

Okay, so after x crashes, post that log file, that should tell us what is failing from the firegl config file. I will post some more info when I get home from work. Let me know if you have problems getting the log file.

Hiya,

well i had a hard time getting my Radeon 9700 running, but it works now ! so maybe i can helpout a bit, i hope....

what do you get when you type dmesg ?

At first glance, i would say you still have to compile the fglrx & agpgart module to fit your kernel, therefore you need to get the correct linux sources and headers for your distro, unzip em in usr/src/linux/, or even easier, get the rpm

and then follow the instructions :

Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system.
You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir
and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module.
Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh'
in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository.

then run fglrxconfig and all should be fine...
well, it worked for me

>Module fglrx loaded, with warnings
done.

This by itself means that the module built fine and has been installed into /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/kernel/drivers/char/drm, so there's no need to go into /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod to manually build the module with the make.sh script.

There's always a possibility that the problem still lies with agpgart, patch/driver not applied correctly or you didn't select the external agpgart when you fglrxconfig'ed [...you want to use the agpgart supplied by nV's driver].

...but it could be as simple as the "fglrx" module not being loaded.
On the command line, see what modules are actually loaded with lsmod.
If you don't see "fglrx" insert it with modprobe fglrx, but if you find "radeon", remove it first [...modprobe -r radeon] before inserting fglrx.
Also note that agpgart should already be present when you insert fglrx.
...then startx.

/var/log/XFree86.0.log would give you some feedback on what happened the last time X tried to start.

Have you tried this driver? It's ATI's for the 9500 in Linux......didn't see that you mentioned trying it.

D4harvy uses Xfree 4.3.0, since ATI only has drivers vor 4.1.0 and 4.2.0 he is correct about using the schneider-digital fglrx drivers.

It shouldn't hurt to recompile the modules though, just give it a shot.

agpgart could indeed also be the problem, i have an unsupported chipset and had to use "insmod agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1" to make it work.

and it surely would help if you'd gave us some more information about the errors you get as UnTamed expressed.

As to make your xwindows work again with the generic radeon drivers, just rename your XF86Config-4 file and run XF86Config again.

ok, I looked at the log file for the XFree86 config file and well....even a newb like me can understand what is happening....

the agp is the prob....says stuff like can't initialize and so on and so forth
so basically it doesn't seem to be able to use the agp option and that is why it doesn't find the card

so here is what I tried:

got the mandrake 9.1 drivers for the Nforce2 chipset
rpm installed
went to /usr/src/nvidia/nvgart and copied the patch to /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.13mdk and ran patch -p1 < linux-2.4.20-agpgart.diff
then I ran make xconfig
enabled to the chip to be athlon/duron/k7
turned on the Nvidia chipset support
save and exit
run make dep
run make distclean
run make bzImage
went to /lib/modules and renamed the old module file to oldmodules
went back to /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.13mdk
ran make modules
(received some errors around a rio thing)
ran make modules_install
(recieved warnings about the agp_gart and an error about opening a dir)

after this what steps are necessary in order to finish and boot using this "modified" kernel

(and I think it may not go anyways as according to the Nforce2 driver readme......NVIDIA isn't supporting any vid cards besides there own in the driver....hence all the probs....)

so if you think I should keep going what are the next steps to finish installing the modified kernel.....

and if it definitely won't work then I will cave and sell the ati card to buy a new NVIDIA Geforce 5800 or 5900

thanks for all the help...

Cheers,

d4harvey

Sorry to but in, but since nobody replied to my other topics...

I have a RH9 system and a Visiontek Xtasy 9100 (Powered by ATI). 2D performance is fine, but 3D is horrible (fglrxinfo says its using the MESA indirect rendering.) I set up agpgart and fglrx modules to start up (they show up when I run lsmod) , then ran fglrxconfig. I went through all the options, the program sets up an XFree86config-4.config file, and restart X. I get an error having to do with parse errors, and it tells me that the "-4" files are depreciated and to use XF86config instead. It then lets me reset all the options, but without 3D. So could anybody either send me their xF86config file (preferably a RH/Radeon user) or tell me what else I have to do? Thanks for any help.
