Please help me determine which drive I can buy

I have the HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF PC.
I want to buy an SSD to replace the Hard Drive.

Question 1: Is this a 3.5" HD ?

Question 2: Do I look for SATA or IDE drive?

Question 3: What size can I buy? The HP website says "Up to 500 GB SATA hard drive; up to 500 GB self-encrypting solid state drive; up to 160 GB solid state drive' ; however, I already have a 1 TB HD in it and wonder why I can't go bigger with the SSD drive than 160 GB.

Information about computer: https://www.support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03832938

And Linux command information below:

michael@michael-HP-EliteDesk-800-G1-SFF:~$ sudo lshw -short

IDE aka PATA is dead.
HP offers up to 160 GB SSD when you buy the computer to be included. It does not mean it cannot use larger SSD drives.

Ok, so I get an SATA - does it matter if it's SATA or SATA III ?
Also, it's probably 3.5", right?

Screenshot of my current drive performance attached.

SATA III has faster transfer rate indeed, it is supposed to be backwards compatible even if your SATA controller does not support SATA III. You can see it in dmesg what SATA version is used. I guess it is 3.5, this should be in the product manual. Don't they have a PDF for download?

Read the fine ( all right - it is super abbreviated and not so fine) manual(?) at the link.
It says 1 3.5" drive bay & 1 2.5" drive bay, but you should probably open it yourself and look?

Yea, that's the "mini" version. I have the "small form factor."

ok thanks.
I opened it and the HD looks like the standard size HD used in Desktops for a decade or even more.
Must be 3.5"
It's harder to find 3.5" SSD's

So, I could leave the 3.5" drive in there and put a 2.5" SSD drive in, and then install my linux on the SSD drive and tell the computer to use the SSD drive to boot from, right? (probably in the bios)

You can install a smaller drive into big drive slot, it is harder the other way around.

You don't need to, as the PC will happily accept a 2.5" drive. The cables and connectors are the same.

Note that most HP desktops require special screws for mounting hard drives, and screws for 3.5" drives are different from those used by 2.5" drives.

If you want to mount it properly, you'll either have to obtain the right screws or get a 2.5" mounting bracket/adapter.

Or just let it lay there like I do with them, there is nothing to short out on them little cases they are in.

To the OP you want SATA III hard drive to replace the one you have in there. Looking at that cost then you may as well go with 1tb SSD as that is more than I paid for the 1tb SSD drive I put into my laptop.

The actual drive from the model search.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

Thanks for the adapter links as well. I may get one of those 2.5" to 3.5" adapters. Then again I may just put it in the 2.5" slot. Most of these drives probably don't come with the bracket for the 2.5" slot I'm guessing. So will a universal adapter work on that, from ebay.

You said you have a 160 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD.
To me that means the 3.5" drive is the 1 TB and the 2.5" drive is the SSD.
Buying a newer larger SSD would be a simple swap for the existing SSD, since AFAIK all SSDs are the 2.5" form factor. That keeps the existing 1 TB HDD with all the data on it.

Thanks everyone for replying.

Would someone please watch this 4 minute video and tell me if a universal bracket would work or if an HP specific bracket is needed to install the 2.5" SDD (under the HD in this video):
