please help...Hard Drive issues

I have a fairly old computer, i can run Windows XP and Mandrake on it and i've done so for almost a year.

like about 2-3 months ago mostly while in windows i've noticed A LOT of freezing and rebooting noises coming from the machine even though it's still on. Occasionnally it will freeze up and other times freeze for like 30 seconds and continueas if nothing happened.

Now in Linux i still here the rebooting noises fairly often and the machine will freeze on me often enough.

And another weird thing is that like my partitions keep screwing up and i have to re-intall my OS's now last night i started by installing Windows and it kept saying there is no hard drive detected....i get mad sometimes and give my computer like beatings when it gives me these stupid warning messages(blue screen of death) and oddly enough when i give it a couple of whacks it makes the rebboting noises and works normally for a couple of minutes(30 minutes) until it starts making weird rebooting noises, and getting back to the installing when i gave it a pretty severe whacking the Hard drive started making the noises and it detected a hard drive.

My Question is this..... does this sound like a hard drive issue because i am seriously fed up of re-installing the OS's. if not tell me what you think the problem is and i'll look into it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

( i know this isn't a Windows Site but i added the information for more completeness of my issue)

It definitely sounds like hardware problems - could be the connections are loose or your hd is on the way out. Have you tried opening the box to see if anything is loose?

Yes i opened the box and the connections looked perfect... now i can't really tell if my HD is fried or not . :S

and another thing i forgot to mention is that during the installion of the OS's i've noticed that it freezes often (because the hard drive is damaged?) so it's a a small miracle if i can get them to install on 1st shot.

Do you have access to another box? You could try the hd in there to see if it is the problem.

No, i don't....but i was thinking of buying a hard drive trying it out and if it still does the same stuff to me then i can wipe it clean and return it ( i live near a chain that accepts any returns without even looking at it). But the thing is i wanna know if it DEFINITELY sounds like an Hard drive problem.

I think it does sound like a hard drive problem - with the caveat being that I obviously haven't seen it for myself. Have you tried the hd's manufacturers website? They may have downloadable hd diagnostic tools you could try.

That's ok, sorry I couldn't give more definite help - luckily hard drives aren't overly expensive.....
