That is certainly more than adequate to run a Linux distribution. SuSE does tend to be more on the high-end side, because it's quite more capable with audio/video applications. For learning Linux well I recommend one of the older Red Hat releases, such as Red Hat Linux 8, because they're simple installs and they function with the basic Linux standards.
If you want new distributions, then try out Debian. If I ever get a new distribution in college, then it would be just that.
