pixel pipelines?

could someone tell me what pixel pipelines are? i'm looking to buy a video card for my computer i'm building. i'm not much of a gamer, i just want some fairly nice graphics. i will use it mostly for video editing and as a tv tuner. how important are pixel pipelines?

The standard for today is at least 12 pipelines however the more you get the better performance will be. For the situtatioon you mentioned above I think 12 would be fine though.
