I'm 99.99% certain that pidgin, including a bunch of plugins for Pidgin, is already in the {,K,Ed,X,etc}buntu repos...

Open Synaptic and do a search.

First off, this thread should be in software issues, NOT hardware! the standard

Code:
sudo apt-get install pidgin
will install pidgin for you, you need to have administrative privileges, which you do have if it's your own PC, and installed ubuntu yourself.

after the above completes, you will find pidgin in:

Applications -> Internet -> Pidgin Instant Messenger

Hope that works for you.
