Your system is a 'UEFI'?
'EFI' was deprecated in '2005' by 'UEFI'. I do question whether the BIOS is 'EFI' but until we know the HP model number or Motherboard number then we do not know for sure.
I definitely don't have UEFI on my HP system. I've used F5 to restore the BIOS to its factory default state and detected no changes afterwards. The Hard Drive Boot Priority menu still fails to respond when I try to move a lighlighted item to the top using the + key. I am also attaching Micro Star's recent disappointing response to my BIOS question.
Thank you very much for your good suggestion. I've followed your steps sequentially and carefully. I regret to report that I haven't been able to make any headway.
Thank you for your thoughtful suggestion. I agree with you that this problem is a real puzzle. As it's not an urgent matter, I'll let it rest for a while. I posted this question mainly out of curiosity. I'll report back when I make any headway.

Many thanks again.

Thanks for the feedback. I was not sure aboout th 'EFI' without system specifics, since the 'UEFI' did deprecate in 2005 the older 'EFI' and HP did use it for some systems. Your system is 32 bit so that would have excluded that situation if known earlier.
