Periodic hangs upon drive failure with FastTrak RAID controller


I am hoping someone here can help me. The guys at Promise and Intel have been finger pointing at each other and I am left in the middle ...

Promise: “The controller is on the Intel motherboard, we don’t support that, contact Intel.”
Intel: “Contact the vendor for the controller (Promise)”

Ugghh ... but here's the story ...

Shortly after a single drive failure on one of my RAID protected machines I notice that the system continually pauses for approximately seven (7) seconds out of 19 (i.e. 12 seconds OK, 7 seconds pause, 12 seconds OK, 7 seconds pause, etc). This is obviously a difficult to reproduce problem and has happened three times now (in a period of approx 2 months). Today I saw it and the pausing is still happening. The first message I see on the console is:

Then the pausing begins. We are running Red-Hat Linux and some user-space testing is indicating that the pausing is system wide. All user-space processes including system daemons hang for seven seconds. It seems that the processor is not receiving at least some interrupts, and likely they are being masked out. Cat'ting /proc/interrupts and /proc/stat indicates that at a minimum timer interrupts are not being registered during the pause time. However the Intel Xeon processor clock cycle counter (the rdtsc register) does continue to increment.

The other times this happened both were preceded with failed RAID drives. The failed system in is still running and pausing and if there is more info you would like I can supply it.

Previously I stopped the pausing by reseating the drives ... this resulted in synchronization issues but the pausing stop. Also re-building the array also helped. However I am hoping that there is something I can do to fix it once and for all.
