Pentium IV CPU frequency on Ubuntu Dapper?
 

Hello,

I previously had installed Gentoo Linux on my Pentium IV (w/HT) machine, and had the choice of a number of CPU frequencies, ranging from 300 MHz to the full 3 GHz. When I set the frequency to, say, 300 MHz, my computer would slow down significantly, to a speed I would expect from a 300 MHz P4.

Now, I've installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake on the same machine, and modprobe'd the p4-clockmod module. I'm now only left with three choices for frequency, from 2.25 GHz to 3 GHz. I don't understand why Dapper Drake won't let me underclock my CPU below 2.25 GHz, like Gentoo Linux did. I want to underclock my CPU so that I don't waste energy or generate too much heat when I'm not doing anything with my computer. Would the only (potential) solution to this problem be to recompile my kernel?

Doesn't the stock kernel do that automatically? At least on my normal desktop Ubuntu stock installation I've got it working so that when I'm not doing anything with my pc, the clock is decreased down to some hundred MHz's, and when I am doing something that needs CPU, it's increased (again automatically) up. Why would you like to do it manually?

The stock kernel didn't do the CPU frequency automatically so I modprobe'd the module myself. I am using the default powernowd daemon so that part is automatic too.

Hmm, never heard of this, but it sounds interesting...
