Pentium 2 running very cold... overclock ?

Hey guys...
i rescued a few old computer parts that were destined to be left behind when my
school was demolished.

i was told that the pentium 2 i found is rated at 266Mhz, and so i set the jumpers
on the motherboard accordingly.

hoever, ive found, even after hours of running, the cpu never gets hotter that 22 degree's which is slightly above room tmpreature.

other similar machies i have run at tempretures around 40-60 degrees,

is it likely that the teacher made a mistake and infact the cpu is rated higher ?

there are no markings on the cpu that might allow me to look-up the rating.

what tempreture should i expect a pentium2 class cpu to reach ?
and what is a safe limit ?

i am aware that heat is not the only danger of over clocking,

thanks for anyone with any info

The top of the cartridge should have a code with all that info on it, but my initial thought was your temp probe is defective. My PII says BB0523P350512E, for example, which identifies it as 350Mhz with 512K L2 cache.

Just type " dmesg " in a console. That will usually get the information directly froim the cpu. That should give you a good indication of what the chip actually or already is.

yeah i get some messages dureing boot about what speed it is, but i thought that might be the speed setting.

thanks for the info, looks like 266 is correct.
dont suppose there is a safe way to test my temp probe ?
