pentax optio S camera problems

OK, I have this pentax.

First off I plug it in, turn it on.

Digikam fails to auto-detect

Reading around on similar threads I try

As root "modprobe usb_storage"

Can't locate module usb_storage

I also try modprobe usb-storage

This gives no message at all. I am using SuSe 9.0

The last part of dmesg gives me the following.

Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...

So it sees a pentax there.

Also, if I boot with the camera plugged in, the machine freezes.
(Or indeed go into YaST with the camera plugged in.)

You can probably see I am fairly clueless, and no techie.
So can anyone spell out exactly what I need to do?

I find an answer here

But this raises another question which I shall post later
