PCS Data Card in Debian
 

I'm planning on getting a laptop soon, and I'll be using it on the road a lot (OTR truck driver). I'd like to get a cellular data connection (such as Sprint PCS datacard and service) for when I don't have a WiFi signal or other connections.

The thing is, according to the company, the service is only supported on Windows machines. There aren't provisions for Mac or Linux.

Does anyone know of any non-company-sanctioned software that'll allow this service to work with Linux, specifically Debian?

I don't however, as a side comment, you might consider setting up your laptop as a dual boot Windows / Linux machine. In a way, that's almost like having two laptops with you at all times. I originally started out with my laptop (IBM T40, a great machine BTW) running pure Linux, but retreated from that position slightly by restoring XP. For me, that decision was driven primarily because of work, and the fact that the company uses certain software which doesn't come in a Linux version. In any event, the main point here is just that it might make sense to consider getting a slightly larger drive, and going dual boot.

There's a great partitioning tool called BootIT NG that's excellent for resizing an NTFS partition. Good luck with it in any event -- J.W.

I've thought about setting up a dual boot, so I can do games and such that won't run under windows. But I do want the linux boot to be able to access the net via the card so I can use it for e-mail and surfing. After all, Linux is natually immune to the vast majority of the nastiness on the web.
