PCMCIA problems
 

I just installed Mandrake Linux on my laptop. It seems that the boot is stalling on the 'Starting pcmcia' line. Any clues?

It could be any number of htings. Is pcmcia configured in your kernel? Can it find the right modules? I've never had a problem with mandrake being able to set up network stuff. Did you set it up during install? FInally, the possibility exists where your card isn't linux friendly.
