PCMCIA Freezes!

I am having a lot of trouble getting Mandrake 9.1 up and running on my Compaq Presario 2110US. It freezes when the PCMCIA services (attempt to) start. I have changed the start up sequence in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/ from S96 to like S06 (right after hardware detection) like it suggests at "http://home.attbi.com/~foglem/2105us.html” and disabled IRQ’s for most common and used IRQ’s as well as IRQ 10 like it says to do at ”http://sole.infis.univ.trieste.it/~d...io2120ea.html” . But it still freezes when boot up gets to PCMCIA services (Netgear MA401 WLAN, PRISM chipset) It executes “cardmgr” and gets the right name for the card, beeps once, and then freezes the whole system. Only the power button works.

I have tried another card that I know is supported in Linux and I get two high beeps and it freezes in the manner described above. Can someone suggest the next step for troubleshooting?

Thanks
