Question PCM doesn't work everything else does

Hi, I am running Slackware 12 on an HP dv9500
(laptop)
. Kernel 2.6.23.13 (because I read that kernel has the intel HDA audio drivers)

lspci | grep HD showes:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

lsmod | grep snd showes:
snd_pcm_oss 38048 0
snd_mixer_oss 16512 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_hda_intel 256668 1
snd_pcm 64388 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel
snd_timer 19972 1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 11144 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

when I run alsamixer it identifies my sound card and a number of faders show up. there is even a fader for pcm and i can 'adjust the volume' but the indicator that tells you whether pcm is muted or unmuted isn't there... headphone jack does have this indicater however. headphones don't work tho. I can attempt to play media using xine, and xine seems to think my card is working, but I get no sound.

What do I do next?

slackware (bsd script) http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Alsa-sound-4.html

http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind..._snd-hda-intel

but no mention of ich8

I tried alsaconfig previously. It told me that it successfully installed my device but didn't fix the problem. I tried to install alsa 1.0.15rc3 as described in the ubuntu page, but when I do ./configure, it eventually says:
configure: error: You have built-in ALSA in your kernel. does this mean I should modularize it instead?

/boot/config will show y for built in , m for module so have a peek yourself.

if you are going to re-compile your kernel that is a different set of steps and you may want to look for a guide for slackware....but slack is normally one of the closest to vanilla of all distros along with the old Gentoo.

I made alsa an module, upgraded it. sound still doesn't work. alsa showes a new fader 'digital-in'. still no led or mute option for pcm (as well as digital-in). anything else I can do to try and get this thing workin'? Are ALSA and OSS supposed to be running at the same time?

open kde Control ctr/sound&mm/sound system...first tab....move slider to auto-suspend say 0 or 2 seconds...in other words...a force timeout...and make sure sound is enabled

tab 2 hardware...pulldown and force sound server using alsa
midi device pulldown and force alsa....

click apply and see if that helps

that is for wireless and ethernet
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/j...3/id,list_c-f/

can we review some of my earlier questions.....pls

when you tried alsaconf in the past....did you then run alsamixer to raise any volumes and or unmute various settings? in root mode.

in lieu of alsamixer kde has kmix.

q2 review....

in kde c ctr...was there an option for alsa for the sound server hardware tab....any errors?

q3...assuming in the past...you had alsa compiled in...did you confirm that in the config file?....and did you do a kernel re-compile or what to build the module.....I am talking out of turn...but maybe you just made a new module...which is never going to work...if you current kernel is still using alsa compiled in.

q4....in my first post i said there is no mention of ich8. so assume that is true for alsa and instead change the kde c ctr....to not use alsa but
enlight open or jack.

I do not use jack myself but this may help
http://jackaudio.org/

the other link is for enlightened and pulse...(i hear rumours ppl have trouble with pulse)

after running alsaconf as root I did try alsamixer again as root. nothing changes.

kmix and alsamixer allow me to adjust the pcm fader, but neither has the mute / unmute option. (there is no green LED in kmix, and thre is no indicater below the fader in alsamixer...

Q2
under hardware tab, i have an option for 'advanced linux sound architecture' under 'audio device' pulldown. no errors when i apply settings

Q3
I didn't check any config files. what should I look at? I did use 'make menuconfig' to specify alsa as a module, rebuilt kernel (make, make install) then compiled alsa, ran 'make modules' and 'make modules_install'. When I do 'lsmod', as root, I get the following:

<code>
iwl4965 183796 0
iwl3945 161268 0
mac80211 133640 2 iwl4965,iwl3945
cfg80211 9224 1 mac80211
cryptomgr 6528 0
ecb 6656 2
arc4 5760 2
aes 31808 0
crypto_algapi 13696 4 cryptomgr,ecb,arc4,aes
blkcipher 8964 1 ecb
snd_pcm_oss 38048 0
snd_mixer_oss 16512 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_hda_intel 256668 1
snd_pcm 64388 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel
nvidia 7847424 26
snd_timer 19972 1 snd_pcm
snd 41956 7 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 9312 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 11144 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
</code>

I don't see 'alsa' so maybe this is my problem?

Also, here's what my /boot/config contains regarding alsa and sound:
(root@darkstar:/home/greg# cat /boot/config | grep ALSA
CONFIG_VIDEO_SAA7134_ALSA=m
CONFIG_VIDEO_CX88_ALSA=m
root@darkstar:/home/greg# cat /boot/config | grep SOUND
CONFIG_SOUND=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_PRIME is not set)

soundcore 6624 1 snd

1) the thing that stands out so far is.....i have a midi and you don't so we now know why midi was blank in kde c ctr.

2) my actual sndcard is the emu stuff. but I can spot your snd_hda_intel

3) my bad on config....alsa has its own section and not named alsa for individual drivers

open with text and scroll is better to
#Advanced Linux Sound Architecture

you may note they are the same drivers in you lsmod

4) under pci in config I have
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_HWDEP=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_ANALOG=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SIGMATEL=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_VIA=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_ATIHDMI=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CONEXANT=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CMEDIA=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SI3054=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=y
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE is not set

we know yours is a module

but I am now wondering if you have the correct driver. altho I can not yet offer solution...here is where i am thinking of going...rmmod for the intel and modprobe other drivers...ac97 and under config pci set you will find CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0=m which is the generic driver

and here is someones attempt currently a fail...but you might learn something from it?

http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-L.../msg01766.html

I think the good thing about that post...is the lspci is showing the card is detected and ac97 is the driver.
