Pcie x16 slot questions!

Hi all,

Was wanting to know if it is possible to install an pcie x8 card into a x16 slot? Never done this before but I have read it can be done? Also would I have to change the x16 slots configuration in bios for this to work?

Thanks!

Yep. I have a Pciex8 video card in a Pciex16 slot for my RX6600XT video card. No issues. The thing figures out how many lanes it has, and uses them. The days of cards that don't introduce themselves are thankfully over.

Generally you can use a PCIe card with a number of contacts in a PCIe slot with an equal number or more contacts:
PCIe x1 cards fits into all PCIe slots.
PCIe x4 cards fits into PCIe x4 slots (rare), PCIe x8 slots (very rare) and PCIe x16 slots.
PCIe x8 cards fits into PCIe x8 slots (very rare) and PCIe x16 slots.
PCIe x16 cards fits only into PCIe x16 slots.

Check your mainboard manual about PCIe lane usage depending on PCIe slot population. Choose a PCIe x16 slot for your PCIe x8 card that doesn't reduce usable PCIe lanes for your PCIe graphics card. This may be not relevant if you use an IGP.

"open PCIe slots" can handle cards with more contacts than the slot, but this is delicate. Usable PCIe lanes are limited by the slot in this case.
