PCI video card not working with SuSE 10.2
I'm new to Linux so go easy.
I'm running Suse 10.2 on an 2.4GHz Intel Celron machine with about a gig of ram.
The origianl e-GeForce AGP video car died so I found about 5 older (1996-97) PCI video cards. However, with any of the older cards when I boot Suse the first thing I get is a message saying "you have passed undefined mode number." I can press <space> and continue or <return> and choose a new one. I do not get this message when I boot in failsafe mode.
Once the system has booted I can run everything from the command line no problem. When I run startx I get the following:
"Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error: no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining."
I've tried looking at lspci and changing the BusID in my xorg.conf file. I've tried running yast to configure the new hardware but when I choose the monitors settings it locks up. I've also tried running Sax2 but when I tell it to go ahead and rewrite the xorg.conf file I get a black screen and nothing.
Does this sound like something that's fixable on the software side or do I need to pony up the cash for a post 1997 video card? Is there more, better, information I can post?
I just want to run window maker, nothing fancy.
Thanks.
