PCI Modem Not Working...

Hello,

I'm a new comer to Linux with Lycoris in 2.4 Kernel. After I have installed the OS, I can't seem to be able to set up my Lucent Internal PCI modem.

The output of 'cat /proc/pci' is

Quote:

.
.
Bus 1, device 11, function 0:
Communication controller: Lucent Microelectronics 56k WinModem (rev1).
IRQ 10.
Master Capable. No burests. Min Gnt=252.Max Lat=14.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xfc9ff800 [0xfc9ff8ff]
I/O at 0xdff0 [0xdff7]
I/O at 0xd400[0xd4ff]
.
.
And then, I executed 'setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 10 port 0xdff0 autoconfig'.

In kppp, I set up '/dev/ttyS2' as my device and I tried to query the modem, and I only got the responses 'The modem is busy' or 'No response from Modem'.

What steps did i miss?

Thanks a lot,

You missed the statement that it's Winmodem. You'll need to install drivers for it. Do a search on the forums for Lucent Winmodem, there'll be lots of hits. If I were you, I'd buy a nice external serial modem. They work far better and are simple to set up.

For what it is worth, I fought a lucent winmodem for about a week on Mandrake. I gave up and threw in an old 36.6 us robotics hardware modem. It required no setup on my part and worked great. I later swapped for a 56k hardware modem from ebay with no problems to this day.

There are a lot of good isa hardware modems still out there, you just have to look for them. I think there are even some pci hardware modems also.

To me it was worth it to have something 'just work'.
