Exclamation pci 6200 128mb not working in suse or ubuntu

I've been back and forth between windows and linux for a while now, and recently replaced my onboard graphics card with a pci nivida 6200 128mb card. i tried to install suse today and kept getting errors on every restart that the X graphical system could not be started because it was not configured correctly.

i figured it must be because the drivers arent installed for nvidia, but i have no idea how to do that from the boot up command lines. the same thing happened when i tried to install ubuntu.

when i switched back to onboard graphics, everything was just fine. can someone please tell me what it takes to use a pci graphics card with linux?

thank you
