PC upgrade question
 

Hi folks,

I am prepared to upgrade a AMD K-6 box to AMD Athlon 64 socket939. Can I retain the Hard Drives, ATA133/ATA 100, which are running 32 bit Linux/FreeBSD OS? Will reconfiguration of hardware be done automatically after turning on the PC?

You can keep your drives. Whether or not your OS will detect your new
hardware, no one can answer...because you didn't give any information.
Before you buy any new hardware, check to see if it is supported in the
OS and kernel which you intend to install.

There will be no problem on hardware. They match. The graphic card can work on Linux/Unix. I shall retain the old sound card, ethernet card, etc.

Please advice what information?

I did this kind of upgrade on M$Windows previously. It worked for me. I just turned on the PC and the rest were done automatically, but taking sometimes on detecting the new hardware and reconfiguration

However it was 16bit to 16bit and 32bit to 32bit, not 32bit to 64bit as in my case.

Meaning that 64-bit support isn't as good as 32-bit in any OS. So once
you decide which OS to use (i.e. slamd64 for Slackware), then you can
check to see how well it supports your hardware. Unless, of course, you
decide to run a 32-bit OS with your 64-bit CPU. Recognition of hardware
is also dependent upon the installer of the OS you choose.
