PC speaker on UEFI computers
 

My current and previous Slackware PC have had UEFI. When it boots, the PC speaker beeps. However, it seems like after that, in KDE, and with 'beep' (built with SBopkg and from SlackBuilds.org) or my own commands, the PC speaker does not work. Is this something with UEFI? I also noticed Asus system boards in the last several years have little pieces diagramming where you plug stuff in like the power button & lights, speakers, etc., which you then plug onto the pins, and which I used, but it seems sometimes those pieces come slightly loose. Of course, if that really happened, my power button, etc., probably would not have already worked many times.

UEFI is out of it once you have booted. A more likely culprit is that there are 2 speaker drivers in the kernel. The pc speaker itself is driven(if you have no soundcard), and the sound is driven to behave like a pc speaker through alsa(usual arrangement).

You forfeit the startup beep because alsa isn't running then. Nothing is broken. Do not adjust your set, etc. If you delete past the beginning of a line or something, you should hear the speaker through alsa.

In every GNU/Linux (or similar) system I had before the last two years--i.e. since 1997--I had a PC speaker and soundcard and could use either one whenever I wanted. I am not sure what you mean. There is a startup beep. What part of a line would I have to delete?

It was that the PC speaker module is apparently no longer in the kernel by default. :( I added a modprobe to /etc/rc.local.
