PC Non-Responsive :: Harddisk LED On

Ok.. here's the problem with some details:
Distro: Suse (been suse since the beginning).
Amd 2000+
Gigabyte KT300
Seagate 160gb + 120gb Barracuda

Now:
Sometimes (especially during the night), the pc will become busy for some odd reason(the led for harddisk activity is on). Though.. according to the logs... nothing is supposed to be happening.

with 512mb ram.. and a new IDE cable and the harddisks new.. I really think this is the mobo.
Now some other stuff that might help:
The pc does not detect a LPT printer (not in knoppix, windos, suse), though I can set the bits on the port.
Here are some of the logs: (NOTE: During the time this log was created: No-one was working on it.. it was supposed to be doing NOTHING).

Near the end of the log, it says that all of the swap memory is begin used. So you have an out-of-memory situation, and the drive activity is due to the hard drives being used for swap memory (A lot of drive thrashing) Being so low in memory will slow the system down to a crawl. It may even be in a deadlock situation where memory is so low that it can't even free memory.

You might use the "top" command to monitor which program is using up all of the resources.
Also, is there a program that cron runs about this time?
Some programs like "updatedb" are started daily late at night by default (1 am or 3 am) when you are unlikely to be using the computer. There are also KDE services that run in the background. Possibly an image indexing service.

There is a KDE monitor program (I don't remember the name, sorry) and possibly some console programs that can produce a running log, updating every 10 seconds or so. Letting that run at night might show if the memory usage is constantly creeping up. This might indicate a memory leakage problem.

Using kde control centre to connect remotely to the pc giving probems, I have determined the following:
- Multiple instances of "sort" and "find" are running spawned by user "root" . Most the these processes are "asleep" << sleeping
Also I note that the stiffy drive LED goes on sometime. << like as if it is running updatedb
though I do have updatedb as a cron job at 04:00am , but the problems occur most of the time after 06:00am.

ok... now how do I interpret this? What could cause these sort and find processes to be started etc?

Tx
