Pathetic resultas on hd Testing/
"hdparm -tT /dev/hda
/dev/hda5:
Timing buffer cache reads: 128 MB in 4.71 seconds = 27.18 MB/sec
Timing buffer disk read: 64 MB in 4.67 seconds = 13.70 MB/sec
Hmm.. suspicious results: probably not enough free memory for a proper test"
i get these results from runnin the test on a gnome terminal from my fluxbox
if y run thetest from a tty resultas are even worse
"hdparm -tT /dev/hda
/dev/hda5:
Timing buffer cache reads: 128 MB in 11.75 seconds = 10.89 MB/sec
Invalidate: Busy buffer
Invalidate: Busy buffer
repeated several times...
Timing buffer disk read: 64 MB in 8.44 seconds = 7.55 MB/sec
Invalidate: Busy buffer
and so on...
Hmm.. suspicious results: probably not enough free memory for a proper test"
1- why are resultas different from tty than from a temirnal on x? Any suggestions?
2- Any probable reason for havinf such an ugly average? the hd is brand new...

What kind of disk is that?
The strange thing is your buffer cache reads. That is normally way faster than the disk read.Mine goes like
cache 125 MB/sec
disk 29 MB/sec

cipher please post your system specs so we can make some more educated guesses. I really don't mean to be nasty but how am I supposed to divine an answer if I don't even know what you have there?

In addition to system specs you should also post the output of
hdparm -i /dev/hda
And also what kind of cable you are using to connect the drive to the motherboard.

I think the problem may lie in the 'very old motherboard'. Let's have a closer look at your system. Try 'lspci -vb' so we can see what kind of hardware we're working with.
Just a hunch but you may be working with one of the buggy chipsets. Usually there's a workaround in the kernel for just this situation.

OK now let's have a look at your how your kernel is configured. Try
Code:
grep "CONFIG_BLK_DEV" /usr/src/linux/.config
