Partioning external Hark Disk

I am going to buy an external HD soon and I was wondering how can I partition it. As it will be recognized as a usb storage drive it will not be shown on cfdisk, is that right? So, what are the ways for doing that?

Thanks in advance!

cfdisk shows whatever device you point it to. You should just plug it in. And type [CODE] cfdisk /dev/sda[CODE]. assuming you dont have any SCSI,SATA, or other USB harddrives in your computer that should work.

Basically, my, idiot, mistake was that I was trying to mount hda1 to root while I wanted it on a new directory. Now it works fine.
