parallel printer under 2.6.7 kernel (debian/mepis)

My printer (Canon S520) doesn't work. It appears to me that the problem is at the hardware level somehow. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or fix?

I am using SimplyMepis 2004.04 with the 2.6.7 kernel. (I did also try a supplied 2.4 kernel and it failed too.)

kudzu says:
class: PRINTER
bus: PARALLEL
detached: 0
device: lp0
driver: unknown
desc: "Canon S520"
pnpmodel: S520
pnpmfr: Canon
pnpmodes: BJL,BJRaster3,BSCC,TXT01
pnpdesc: Canon S520

The apparently relevant part of the dmesg output:
lp: driver loaded but no devices found

I am using turboprint with CUPS. (It's a little unclear to me if the extra complication of cups offers any benefit with one printer connected directly to the machine, but it's also not clear that the problem has to do with cups.)

To troubleshoot I followed the advice in the CUPS faq and set LogLevel to debug in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and looked at /var/log/cups/error.log, but I didn't see anything that looked helpful. (The output is quite voluminous, however.) I also checked the turboprint log files and didn't see anything that looked like an error.

I don't generally use KDE but I happened to look at the KDE printer status page and saw a list of the ten test jobs I had sent to the printer. All of them were labeled "completed". None were labeled as having failed or created errors.

I noticed that the file /etc/printers.conf contained the line
DeviceURI file:/dev/null
but changing this to
DeviceURI parallel:/dev/lp0
did not seem to have any effect.

lsmod shows
lp 6700 0
parport 23240 1 lp
loaed.

So is there a way to tell what's wrong? It looks to me like somehow the system is unable to talk to the printer on the parallel port. Is there a way to confirm that this is the problem? What can I do to fix it?

this is a wild shot in the dark, but ...

1) Do you know the paraport on this machine works, and
2) Do you have it set to EPP+ECP (I think that's it) in the BIOS?

It worked fine with my old linux setup (SuSE with a 2.4 kernel). I have not changed the BIOS settings from how they were when it was working. Is there some reason I might have to change them?

I'm having a similar problem using MEPIS/DEBIAN with an HP LaserJet 6MP. Try using the KDE Printer Manager to "Add a printer" and let me know what options it gives you for a printer URI. I was getting something like "/dev/unknown_parallel" (not sure, computer is elsewhere).

Sorry, I don't use KDE. I believe I solved my problem by deleting the file /etc/modprobe.conf. This file is not supposed to exist because it prevents modprobe from reading /etc/modprobe.d/*
