parallel port configuration (RH 8.0)

I've added a parallel port card, to be able to get my HP scanner working under Win4Lin.
However Win98 won't detect the port - possibly because Linux has not detected it?
How can I check if Linux sees the port? I have spent hours searching for how-to stuff on parallel ports, can't find anything helpful!

Thanks, Rob
