huh..... i have had about 30 p4 systems roll through here and all had different chipsets. they all worked fine, no problems. if you are asking what is best, that is personal preference, but i like asus boards. intel chipsets work well, even the integrated graphics. now s3 chipsets work fine, but s3 graphics are basically unsupported. so if the board you by has an s3 chipset (which is usually amd, not intel) then you wont want to use the integraded card. nvidia chipsets rock. all of them, hands down are the best, in my book. but really most of the mainstream boards and chipsets will be supported well by linux.
The question was probably to do with which is best Vs price. I'm looking for the cheapest stable chipset. SiS seems to be the cheapest, then Via followed by Intel.
It's going to be a headless server so graphics is not that important execept for initial install.
Do not go with VIA or SIS chipsets because they are not reliable for server use.
I would go with AMD Opteron or Athlon 64-bit processors because they are cheaper, consume less power, radiates less heat, and much faster in just about any server environment.
i agree.... amd is the way to go for cost, and stability. i would only suggest p4s for the video editing and gaming. i dont think you need to go all out with opteron or 64 bit though. you can have a very good server on a 32 bit athlon. but by your question i assume you have a p4 already.... so i would go with the intel chipset, for cost and stability, but i would say nvidia if you really want stability, but the price is mighty high.
