overclocking videocard
 

What program that would run in linux that would let me overclock my videocard in my laptop? the card is a NeoMagic 128 i think, its just a 2 MB videocard, not enought to run video as smooth as i want. Thanx for the help.

My presario 1240 laptop has the same video chipset (neomagic128 2MB) and I'll bet you that your CPU, RAM, or HDD is making the video not smooth, not the video card. Anyway I am assuming it's in a laptop (never heard of neomagic desktop video chipsets), so there really is no way to overclock it. I know my laptop (specs in sig) is too slow to run DivX encoded movies, never tried anything else (no dvd-rom drive in it). Good luck to you tho!

well i dont know why other than the hardrive maybe, cause i have an intel celeron 500MHz and 192MB of ram. the other reason i asked this was i would like to run some games on this thing. But thanx for the help.Maybe im overlooking something

Oh nvm then I thought you had an older laptop like me. I'm not really sure then, you have a fast cpu and plenty of ram...it probably is the video card then. With my laptop it's the ram and/or CPU for sure. Is this a laptop or a desktop? If it's a laptop, then why does a newer laptop come with an older card? And if it's a desktop, just upgrade it, you can get something like an ATI xPert98 (RAGE Pro) chipset for $10-15 or so.

its an laptop Acer Travelmate 508T, but ti think that it has a pos hardrive.

If you go into the BIOS, do you see anything about changing the amount of memory for the video card? I know I was messing with an older HP laptop that had this option to go from 2MB to 4MB, and it helped a little (im sure people paid a pretty penny back then for 4MB desktop cards lol). Since you have 192MB of ram this is no problem for you, 4MB wont make any difference (with onboard video it takes the RAM and shares it). Other then that, I'm not really sure if there's anymore options, I know some laptops have swappable video boards, maybe rip it open and look inside (laptops can be a bitch to put back together - mine has a few missing screws :rolleyes: :D).

Laptop upgradability pisses me off - like with my compaq I can go from 64MB ram to 92 - yea compaq that's really worth the $80 you charge for the proprietary memory! And I tried swapping out the CPU (there are jumpers on the board to change bus speed and voltage) from the P-MMX 266MHz to a k6-2 500, and there is a nice regular looking socket in there, guess what? That CPU is fucking glued to the socket or something :confused:. That's why I retired my laptop just for surfing the net in bed (with a WIRED ethernet card lol) and stupid stuff like that.

well no dice, i cant change the size in the BIOS and i know that this doesnt have a swappeble card in it, and i really dont want to try and soder a newer one in. thats the problem acer has is that there is no real upgrade other than a hardrive and ram, and there support sux nuts. But i didnt pay much for it (Free):p but i didnt think of trying the BIOS, and i have a lot of smarts in hardware with computers. thanx for trying

Hey free is ALWAYS good, it sounds like this was more of a business laptop (decent CPU/RAM, but shitty video), i mean come on now my bottom of the line 1998 compaq laptop has the same thing :P (yours probably has a faster chipset tho - I would hope). But just use it for fun and use your desktop for gaming I guess, the only games I use my laptop for are those fun dos and win95 games, 98SE plays them well. And even with godly electronic-soldering skills, I doubt soldering a new one in would work anyway. Good luck though!

You can not overclock your video card. Neomagic is common in desktops back in the days when there was 2D acceleration. Neomagic was then ported into notebooks. Also the notebooks in those days did not have micro PCI that is used in today's notebooks. A few notebook brands can upgrade most of everything.

You should only use your notebook to type documents, create spreadsheets, presentations, creating databases, browse the internet, e-mail, and other simple applications. You can buy a hefty notebook but 10 pounds (4.535 Kg) can be pretty heavy at the end of the day. The battery life will only last about 30 minutes. The notebook will get very hot. What notebook do you want to carry with you. A lite notebook about 3 pounds (1.360 Kg) and the battery will last 2 hours or more.
