overclocking pny geforce 440 mx

Hey I'm new to the world of overclocking and I want to know. I have spares from old computers and I see a fan that is thin, and small enough to be on top of the GPU for the video card, the fan does not have screws, so should I mount it, or should I wait and buy something made to cool it?

DrOzz 02-08-2004 03:43 PM

i would say that is totally up to you :p
i am not sure what kind of answer your looking for, but if your skilled enough to slap that fan you have on there, and in the end having it do its "job" then why purchase one ...
if you don't have the time nor patience then just buy one ...

zetsui 02-08-2004 04:11 PM

but how much extra juice do you think i would get out of it?

DrOzz 02-08-2004 04:57 PM

by putting a fan on your gfx card ?

zetsui 02-08-2004 05:09 PM

no by taking a crap on it :D lol hahah jkin there with ya buddy
yeah by putting a fan which has a circumfrence that covers that of the GPU

DrOzz 02-08-2004 05:56 PM

umm, a fan (nor crapping on it) will not give your a card a performance increase ....

zetsui 02-08-2004 09:18 PM

im OC'n ;)

Electro 02-08-2004 11:41 PM

Why?
Your graphics card would not give you much by overclocking it.

zetsui 02-08-2004 11:53 PM

that's what you think, maybe you should read a few magazines, and yes i saw performance with my own eyes in halo

DrOzz 02-09-2004 07:13 PM

/me just read in a magazine to go jump off a cliff

Electro 02-13-2004 02:17 PM

Sure overclocking is great but you will viod your warrenty. You will also get artifacts or graphic distortion. You can save up for 3DLabs Wildcat VP990 Pro. It should beat anybody with an ATI RADEON 9800 XT. Though it costs double than the ATI card.

Overclocking may not effect Halo's performance. It could be limited system (CPU, memory, memory bandwidth, agp setting) performance too. Try e-mailing Halo technical support and ask what part of the system depends on Halo's performance. If you are running Halo in Wine, you will not get much of a performance by overclocking.

BTW, there is science behind putting a fan on a heatsink. Using the wrong fan will make the heatsink and fan useless.

zetsui 02-13-2004 02:56 PM

no i run games on windows native. and yes i plugged in the card and it was going very slow, i put the clock and memory up by nearly 75% (heatsink only) and the game ran smooth!!!!!!!
What is the science of using the fan?

Electro 02-14-2004 04:48 PM

If the fan moves a large volume of air and its only a few millimeters away from the bottom of the heatsink. The fan and heatsink becomes useless or doesn't do its job. If the fan is far enough from the bottom of the heatsink (about a few centimeters). Both the heatsink and fan will do their job. Different heatsinks designs work better in different orientations. A smaller diameter in the middle of the fan will create less hotspots on the heat sink. Hotspots is where the heat is just setting there.

I can not find the link that explains what heatsinks and fans to get for different applications.

You can use small speakers (shielded) instead of fans. This will take some time to make it work. You probably want to use peizo speakers.

wait electro if i have a fan, which has a diameter and circumfrence that encompases my heatsink is that good enough
or do u mean smaller is better?

maroonbaboon 02-15-2004 07:31 AM

Anything that gives airflow over the heatsink is bound to have some cooling effect. As electro says, if you put the fan against the heatsink then the sink itself will block the airflow. The best scheme would make all the air from the fan pass over the heatsink without restricting the flow in any way.

On a P4/Athlon the fan is right on top of the heatsink, but the deep fins give plenty of room for the air to escape as well as lots of area to transfer heat.

Never heard of using speakers!!! What kind of music works best? Something cool maybe :-)
