Can't see much wrong with that file you might want to try either a DVI cable or a custom modeline like the one that it says is supported for 1680x1050 in the detection part like this for the monitor section.

Code:
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "NFF8705"
    ModeLine "1680x1050" 146.2 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089
    HorizSync 30-83
    VertRefresh 56-75
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Smile spot on help...

Thanks I think I'm there now, I tried the modeline thing and that centred the screen perfectly. I also subsequently tried a DVI cable which was supplied with the monitor. That did two things; when I boot, the initial scrolling text is now centred properly so you can read it (if you can read very fast....) also when kde runs up and I look in settings/ peripherals/ monitor section the system only presents me with the one maximum resolution - there are no choices any more.

So anyway I'm happy and thanks again for persisting with this for me. Is there somewhere I can find out what the modeline thing and its parameters mean?

All the best
Greeb

Good to hear you got it working properly. A DVI cable is a much better way to connect when you have a VGA connected it treats your digital monitor as an old analog one so you have to do like you were trying to center it with your controls set your resolutions ... this is not needed with the digital. You might want to remove/comment out that modline now and see how it goes without it I suspect now that connected with DVI you will be centered with the normal detection and if you do this change to the DisplaySize 490 320 ##mm like it says in the detection using that built-in native mode or you could probably remove/comment out if you wanted it is usually not needed.

Your welcome. I do not know all the details just what I have read and seen where others have constructed one for themselves. He is where the vesa drive comes in real handy as it will show every mode that the monitor supports as below.

Code:
(II) VESA(0): 720x400@70Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 640x480@60Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 640x480@75Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 800x600@56Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 800x600@60Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 800x600@75Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 832x624@75Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 1024x768@60Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 1024x768@75Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 1280x1024@75Hz
 (II) VESA(0): 1152x870@75Hz
 (II) VESA(0): Manufacturer's mask: 0
(II) VESA(0): Supported Future Video Modes:
 (II) VESA(0): #0: hsize: 1440 vsize 900 refresh: 75 vid: 3989
 (II) VESA(0): #1: hsize: 1440 vsize 900 refresh: 60 vid: 149
 (II) VESA(0): #2: hsize: 1280 vsize 1024 refresh: 60 vid: 32897
 (II) VESA(0): #3: hsize: 1280 vsize 960 refresh: 60 vid: 16513
 (II) VESA(0): #4: hsize: 1152 vsize 864 refresh: 75 vid: 20337
(II) VESA(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
 (II) VESA(0): clock: 119.0 MHz Image Size: 474 x 296 mm
 (II) VESA(0): h_active: 1680 h_sync: 1728 h_sync_end 1760 h_blank_end 1840 h_border: 0
 (II) VESA(0): v_active: 1050 v_sync: 1053 v_sync_end 1059 v_blanking: 1080 v_border: 0
(II) VESA(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
 (II) VESA(0): clock: 146.2 MHz Image Size: 474 x 296 mm
 (II) VESA(0): h_active: 1680 h_sync: 1784 h_sync_end 1960 h_blank_end 2240 h_border: 0
 (II) VESA(0): v_active: 1050 v_sync: 1053 v_sync_end 1059 v_blanking: 1089 v_border: 0
 (II) VESA(0): Ranges: V min: 56 V max: 75 Hz, H min: 28 H max: 83 kHz, PixClock max 150 MHz
 (II) VESA(0): Monitor name: L226WTQ
(II) VESA(0): Searching for matching VESA mode(s):
Now the parts in bold are where you see the things needed to construct a modeline like I did.

Code:
(II) VESA(0): clock: 146.2 MHz Image Size: 474 x 296 mm
This line gives you the rate the pixel clock runs at needed for the first number in the line and the size of the image that will be displayed on your monitor for your DisplaySize usually not needed but I put it in anyways.

Code:
(II) VESA(0): h_active: 1680 h_sync: 1784 h_sync_end 1960 h_blank_end 2240 h_border: 0
This gives you the next four number needed to tell X the horizontal boundaries of the screen.

Code:
 (II) VESA(0): v_active: 1050 v_sync: 1053 v_sync_end 1059 v_blanking: 1089 v_border: 0
This the last four numbers for the vertical.

Code:
(II) VESA(0): Ranges: V min: 56 V max: 75 Hz, H min: 28 H max: 83 kHz, PixClock max 150 MHz
This shows you the maximum of your pixel clock any mode using higher than this cannot be displayed by the video card/monitor plus your refresh rates for the monitor as detected looks like you can change the horizontal refresh from the 30-83 I had to 28-83 now that I notice it.
