Okay, I'm using the via82cxxx_audio drivers for sound, and it works fine in, say, an SDL app, or through XMMS's esound plugin, but I can't play it through OSS. I thought that OSS basically meant: "don't use any special plugins or daemons, just play".

The reason I'm so hung up on this is if I keep the esound daemon running (so I can use XMMS or FreeAmp), sound in all other apps is severely delayed, and sometimes poorer quality. I get this same effect if I run the arts daemon too, so that's not an option. In MDK I disabled all those daemons and everything worked beautifully, but I'm not sure how to set it up in Slackware. You can only get the "payed for" version of the drivers from that site, and I can't find any pertinent info in any of the docs or forums. I basically want to be able to have sound without running esd. I was able to do it in Mandrake, though as usual I don't know how because that rat bastard of a distro did it all behind my back. Anybody have any ideas?
