Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Oss

This could go either in this forum or the software forum... but I decided to post it in here becuase .... well, I don't know why. Anyway, I use OSS for sound. The problem is that when I want to watch video files on my box I have to fiddle with whatever player I want to use in order to get sound to work. Xine seems to not want to work half the time. I tell it to use OSS and it will then tell me it is busy and then it will work later on... Mplayer is kind of like the same. They both tell me that the device is in use, which it isn't. The only thing that I thought of that could have been messing with it would have been XMMS (it is the only other sound utilizing program I use a lot) , but it was shut down. Any ideas?? Oh and another thing. I got UT 2003 and the sound will not work in there at all. Is that because I need an Alsa supported card? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

You seem to have forgotten to include one vital nugget of information: What sound card is it?
