Post OS keeps resetting during boot up

I am new to Linux and helping out a friend so my apologies in advance for my ignorance.

The computer is a P4 1.8 using am ASUS M/B with Mandrake as the distribution. The motherboard was replaced and all seemed to go well the first time the computer started. When the computer was rebooted the window appears to press "I" for interactive startup. It then mentions the computer was not restarted properly and would I like to force file system integrity check. I have 5 seconds to acknowledge and regardless of whether I do or don't the computer then restarts.

Again my knowledge of Linux is limited but I have tried the failsafe mode and the same thing happens. Any suggestions would be helpful. It looks as though there is a problem with the data but I am not sure.

Thanks in advance,

Adrien

Does it give you the option to hit Y to force file system integrity check? If so hit Y...let us know what happens

The options does come up. Regardless of whether I press 'Y' or not the same thing happens. There is a progress bar at the bottom of the screen and it moves to about 15% complete then the computer restarts.

Regards,

Adrien

try to re install it, perhaps having the new hardware not maching the current drivers on the operating system might cause the problem that you have.

Thankyou for your advice. I might have to get someone more experienced to re-install Mandrake. The motherboard was an ASUS P38266 and I replaced it with an ASUS P4P800S-X. I was hoping that the same series/manufacturer of M/B may have worked and it seemed to initially. The video is separate to the motherboard so there shouldn't be a display problem.

Is there another way I can force a system integrity check?

Regards,

Adrien
