Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Optio S4 / 2.6.5

I am trying to connect my camera to my computer, and all seems well. It recognizes it as a USB mass storage device. But. I can't mount it. Here's a copy of the relevant dmesg output:

usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using address 5
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Vendor: Pentax Model: Optio S/S4 Rev: 1000
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
USB Mass Storage device found at 5

I try doing mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/cdrom but no luck. I get mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device

Any ideas? Is a kernel recompile needed?
Thanks
