optimizing linux kernel
dear friends,
in linux we have the option for reconfiguring kernel or we can download new kernel from the net.but downloading kernel is diificult.
when make xconfig command is give the config window appers
and we can make changes and WE CAN SAVE IT TO A FILE.
SO IS THERE ANY WEBSITE WHICH PROVIDES FILE?
IF SO IT WOULD BE GREAT HELP FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T DOWNLOAD HUGE KERNELS
AND ALSO HOW CAN I OPTIMIZE THE KERNEL FOR PENTIUM $ PROCESSORS?

You are missing something, you are saving configuration of the kernel which then used to compile kernel, without a source code what is it good for? And it is a nonsense to think that you can upgrade to a newer kernel just by upgrading .config file in /usr/src/linux, make a life a little easier you can get patches and patch your existing kernel tree, the downside of doing so is if you have supposely 2.4.2 and you want to upgrade to 2.4.19 you would have to patch you kernel to 2.4.3 then to 2.4.4 and so on till you reach 2.4.19 it is very tedious task to perform, as for optimization issues in kernel configuration when you run make xconfig|menuconfig|config there is a family processor type to choose from in the processor configuration.

uttam_h may be trying to reconfigure his existing kernel and is looking for a generic config. file to avoid the daunting(to a newbie in particular) task of menuconfig, etc. if so, and i am only guessing, he should just recompile his kernel using the help options available for each menuconfig choice both to learn and to configure the kernel to suit his operation-setting up for a pentium along the way as suggested by neo7777-depending on the kernel he has the patch thing might be helpful, though i don't know-could just be more hassle than waiting 3-4 hours for a kernel download(don't laugh, i've been there-the worst thing is when you're two hours into it and some glitch sends you to start over. this may all miss the point, but so i'm out 5 minutes typing time-hope it works out.
