Optical spdif, no sound from soundcard

I am using Slackware 10.2, kernel 2.4.31, and I cannot get any sound. My setup is as follows: Dynex DX-SC5.1 soundcard (http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-190-...ound-card.aspx) connected to my Pioneer A/V receiver through the optical spdif TOslink cable.

In windows, the driver used is "Envy 24 Family Audio (WDM) and the only sliders I need for sound are Master, Wave and PCM SPDIF. To watch movies, my receiver decodes the 44100 signal.

I have disabled my onboard soundcard and tried alsaconf again, but it still doesn't work. From lots of reading and research (but no luck), I have narrowed down my problem to the following:

1. slider configuration
2. need to upgrade to kernel 2.6 (which I didn't have success with)
3. .asoundrc - need to create it and have no idea what to put in it

Let me know if you need more information. Thank you in advance.
