Optical Output - sound issue!

Ok, i have posted a previous thread with regards to sound issues, but i have now narrowed it down ALOT!

Basically i use the optical output from my motherbaord to go into a 5.1 system!
I can get sound when playing MP3's in xmms but am unable to get sound when playing videos in VLC (also tried Mplayer)!

After many days of frustrating silence , i thought i might try and see what happens when i plug in some headphones into my front panel... and gues what... hey presto, i got sound!!!

so, i then thought, if i can feed the output from the front panel into the line-in on my speakers, i would get sound, and again, i did! however the sound quality is not so good, and is extremly quiet!

If i can get sound to work on xmms, surely there must be a way to get audio from videos without having to do it in this extremly complex manner?

Also, whay could be the cause/reason for this?

Thanks for any help!

still have not found a solution for this work-around!

someone on another site suggested i may be lacking a driver... if this is the case, why am i recieving sound from xmms?
