optical mouse unstable

I am using a logitech optical mouse (USB) on the system I built over the weekend (Athlon 64, GigaByte Mobo, Suse 9.1 kernel) sometimes the cursor zooms off to the top or bottom of the screen. Does anyone have any idea what the fix is?

I have found that if you use a less than optimal tracking surface you will, with some mice, get a lot of random movement also it could be an issuewith the usb setup or the mouse--try using another usb mouse if you or a friend has one and try your current mouse with a ps/2 adapter. odds are its one of these three issues.
